Michael Moore hand-planing in shop
Michael Moore
From the age of twelve Michael knew he wanted to be a woodworker, specifically a custom furniture maker. He is self-taught, learning from articles in popular woodworking magazines and from experience. With his diverse knowledge, innate skill and impeccable workmanship, Michael is able to create unique pieces for his clients. His design style incorporates curves, hand cut veneers and fine details in contrasting woods. Michael specializes in chair making.
As a native of Victoria, BC, he grew up surrounded by spectacular scenery and wonderful forests. Michael has great understanding of the indigenous tree species of Vancouver Island and likes to use local woods such as Arbutus, Garry Oak and Western Maple as often as he can. He mills his own wood, air drys it for two or three years then carefully selects it for his projects.
Most of his work is commissioned, one-of-a-kind furniture which he hopes will be heirloom pieces in the future. Michael believes, as the American Japanese woodworker George Nakashima did, that a tree should be honored by having the furniture last as long as the tree lived. As for his personal philosophy, he feels that a craftsman making furniture for local people using local materials is a circular way of working and reflective of the Arts and Crafts ideals that he holds in high regard.

Visitors are always welcome. Please phone ahead to make sure we are available.
Michael also exhibits his work whenever he can and often has furniture for sale at fine craft galleries and local shows.
In 2005 Michael and Pam moved to the Cowichan Valley with the goal of having a quiet country lifestyle. They built a large woodwork shop and their home, which acts as an interim gallery to showcase their craft.
“One of the benefits of this line of work is the close relationships we have established with many of our clients. In our endeavours to create unique furniture for each commission, pieces that suit individual homes and personalities, we have in turn received the gift of friendship and generosity. That makes it all worthwhile.” Michael Moore

Pamella & Michael Moore
Pamella Moore
Pamella grew up in the Prairies and after some world travelling, eventually found her way to Vancouver Island where she met and married Michael Moore. She came from an artistic family and her creative abilities make a great partnership with Michael’s talents. She was always interested in sculpture and furniture design and shortly after meeting, the pair had an opportunity to collaborate on some projects. It took Michael awhile to ask her on a date but eventually their relationship blossomed and the rest is history. They have been living and working together for the past 16 years.
“From the beginning we were able to bounce ideas off each other and quickly discovered we had a similar sense of humour. That is what has saved the day on more than one occasion!”
Although Pam works closely with Michael on the designs, she knows that Michael has the hard part of building the furniture pieces.
“I am an integral part of the business but I prefer to be in the background in a supportive role. I enjoy being involved with client meetings and showing people our work. Occasionally, I assist with sanding but generally I’m not in the shop when the machines are going as Michael really needs to stay focused while he is working.”
“Our relationship works because we have a similar philosophy about life and share the same goals. We both wanted to live in the country and feel very fortunate to be able to do so. The natural landscape inspires us and we cherish the tranquillity here. The Cowichan Valley is a great place to live and work and we have found a wonderful community of other artisans and friends.” Pamella Moore
