Lifelong Learning

A good topic for my first post as I try to learn how to blog. You can watch my progress.

Continuous learning had come very naturally to me and now that I know it helps you stay healthy when you are old I will keep going.

Woodworking has been a great profession for me in that respect. Self taught is exactly that, learning as you go, sometimes failing but always learning.

There are so many good cliches that go along with this theme, one of my favorites, “If you have never made a mistake then you have never made anything”.

How about a free studio tour for the best cliche’ from a reader.

Well I know that is not much of a prize as all you have to do is show up and you get a free studio tour.

Back to the lifelong learning, I wouldn’t even be attempting this if I hadn’t taught myself to type at the ripe old age of 35. Computers were just being invented when

I went to high school and typing was not on my list of necessary courses. Fast forward twenty years from high school and a computer helped me learn to type.

It never ceases to amaze me how many professionals I meet that use the computer extensively who don’t know how to type properly.

My sister inspired me after seeing her type at an amazing rate, it sounded like a machine gun. Tap a tap tap at about 150 words a minute, awesome to watch for a non-typer.

A few years ago I taught myself to carve. Fortunately I chose the easiest form of carving to learn, chip carving. Basically you make three cuts in a triangular pattern at a slight angle and then a chip pops

out. So simple. So easy right? It is pretty easy to learn the basic techniques and slowly progress to more advanced designs as you learn. However I jumped in at the deep end and chose a very complex

design with the added complication of a very tight deadline. There is nothing quite like putting intense pressure on yourself to perform. Either you rise to the challenge or you don’t. No one will know but you

if you fail. The finished product will be there for all to see if you succeed.

So here is a photo of my very first carving project. I was 40 at the time. I hope to still be teaching myself new things at 50, 60 and 70.
